Give Me Shelter

Give Me Shelter

The long-term costs of underproviding public, social and affordable housing.

Give Me Shelter is a ground-breaking series of reports outlining the significant costs of not addressing the chronic shortage of affordable, public and social housing in Australia. Commissioned by Housing All Australians (HAA), the economic studies show decades of underinvestment by governments in “non-market” housing has led to social housing numbers falling to record lows – just 4 per cent of national housing stock, compared with 6 per cent in 1996.

Give Me Shelter clearly demonstrates the underlying business case for greater investment in affordable, public and social housing.

Give Me Shelter: Youth Report

Released in partnership with SGS Economics and Planning in April 2024, the third report in our series examines the rise in youth (aged 19-24) experiencing homelessness and solutions to address the growing crisis. Underinvestment in youth homelessness is creating a widening gap in the provision of supported accommodation for some of Australia’s most vulnerable people.

Our report estimates that failure to act on shelter needs for Australian youth will be costing the community $4.5 billion* per year by 2051. Every $1 the Australian community invests in social and affordable housing for youth will deliver $2.6 in benefits.

Our research helps inform business and the public of the long term economic and social consequences of inaction.

Give Me Shelter: Leave No Veteran Behind

Released in partnership with RPS, a Tetra Tech company, the second report in our series examines the rise in veterans experiencing homelessness and solutions to address the growing crisis.

While homelessness among veterans of the Australian Defence Force has been identified as an issue, its extent has not been fully understood.

Our report estimates that homelessness among our veterans will cost $344m a year, with veterans nearly 3 times as likely to experience homelessness compared to the general population.

Our research helps inform business and the public of the long term economic and social consequences of inaction.
